The Beautyshop- Great Food, No Hairstyles lol

Hey to the yummy chummy followers!

Last week was yet a delicious feast again. On June 27, we went back to one of our favorite neighborhoods in the Memphis area, Cooper Young. We dined at the Beautyshop and no ladies and gentlemen we did not get our hair done. We loved the decor with old beauty salon accessories......the old hair dryers and shampoo basins teasing our memories!  The parking arrangement is rather strange in that all the lots around the restaurant are for other places.....none designated for The Beauty Shop.  Not to worry the waiters said.......no one has been TOWED  YET......it's not very crowded YET......we THINK you will be fine!  Although no one was towed, you might want to think about parking on the street! We got our bellies very full. The appetizer was a yummy guacamole dip. Can you say AMAZING! Big chunks of avocado with the mushy part too.....not as liquid as at Las Delicias(?) guacamole which we also give high marks.  This guac(a little restaurant lingo for you!) rated just as high! Now i will include some thoughts from our group below about their dishes:

Janice 's old fashioned, pan-fried burger was OK.
Marieta and Nelda's BLTs were very good and delicious respectively.
Meli's grilled cheese with tomato was delicious (they used provolone cheese!!!)
Fay and Norris got one of the specials : a ham and cheese crepe. Fay thought it was OK; Norris thought it was good but not great.
Shirley and Melva got the chicken sandwich with a homemade roll. Shirley thought it rated a 10 whereas Melva thought it good but not great.

Now to the best part of a meal. The desserts!!!  Several desserts were ordered: chocolate crepe, one with ice cream and one without; berry crepe with ice cream; creme brûlée; and pistachio ice cream.  Conclusions: creeps are better with ice cream (shocker!), creme brûlée rich, creamy & delicious; pistachio ice cream  was great!

The presentation of the food was SUPERB! Kudos to the Beautyshop for presentation and food!

Overall ranking: 7.56

Bayou Bar & Grill- One of the BEST ever!

Bayou Bar and Grill
2094 Madison Ave
Memphis TN
http://www.bayoubarmemphis.com/

Hey fellow chummy followers:

On Wednesday June 20 we went to Bayou Grill!! It was soooooo yummy to most of us! With the exception of Connie, all attending gave The Bayou Bar & Grill a pretty high rating!  Connie's étouffée left a lot to be desired she said. She also thought the place a little dirty.  I guess the rest of us called that "atmosphere" as we merrily stuffed our faces. While it is no fine dining establishment the atmoshpere is still great and the food was wonderful.

We were so glad to have Marilyn, Isabella and Brook join us this week.  You would not believe it but we have a young member of our group that might be around the age of 8 named Brook who can name the entire Dugger family!!!That is a lot of J's!  Marilyn ordered a crab bisque  She thought it was very creamy, which she stated most bisque are, BUT she would not order it again.  Good to remember.  Brook and Melanie said thier fries were great.  Janice ordered the hamburger and described it as AWESOME! Nelda and Melva enjoyed the 1/4 muffuletta and a cup of gumbo. The muffuletta was tasty...a lot of bread, but I guess that is normal on a muffuletta?  The gumbo was yummy for sure!  Meli ordered a veggie burger and described it as "delicious".

Now to desserts!  Ahhhhhhh!  DESSERTS!   We started with one order of bread pudding and an order of apple cobbler both with ice cream.  Janice took one look at the size of the bread pudding and decided to order another one,  Some of the words used to describe the bread pudding : "out of this world" & " outstanding"!   The apple cobbler was excellent as well.

Other points to be made about Bayou: prices were reasonable and it has a very nice outside seating area. This area even has little misters to keep you cool in the summer. Question would be if those fine mist sprayers really make it comfortable in the hot Memphis summer????  Some of us thought we would be willing to give it a try maybe not in 105 degree weather lol..  It would definitely be good to return in the fall though and sit outside.

TOTAL SCORE: 7.43

Our other BIG news this week was the addition of Peter Thomas Gibson to our group!  I know that everyone joins me in sending congrats , best wishes and love to the Gibson family of FOUR and to the proud grandparents, Donna and Bob! We all can't wait to meet little Pete personally and welcome him into Yummy Chummys! Peter will be our FIRST male member!!!
Until next time!

Wednesday Lunch Group (Lots of Restaurants to Catch You Up On)

Hey Everybody! This is the Yummy Chummy group from Memphis TN. We are a group of Christian women who during the summer months have decided to venture out into Memphis and try some of our great local cuisine! Took us a while but we thought maybe we should share some of our experiences with the world just in case you stop in our town and get hungry! So far we have visited some great places. After each lunch meal on Wednesday each one of us rates the restaurant based on the food and drinks giving it a score between 1-10. This will be an extremely long post since its our first one and we have been going to restaurants since Bible Study ended in late April so here goes our experience!

Alcenia's
North Main Street
http://alcenias.com/

We had fun fun, fun plus good eatin' at Alcenia's on North Main.  The hardest decision was choosing between the fried chicken, the fried catfish and the meat loaf.  The catfish was very good and the chicken which was also very good. Candied yams were yummy but a big portion.   We had to save room at the table for a piece of egg custard pie. Now some of us have never tasted Theresa's Egg Pie (Donna's mother) so some do not have that to compare....it is supposed to be the BEST EVER in Booneviile and all parts there abouts.........BUT most of us will say that the pie was worth every penny I paid for it.  Served warm, Carol P. described it as heavenly.  We all told our fellow luncher Donna, we will have to impose upon you to make one of your mother's pies so we can taste test it.  Oh....I forgot to mention the fried tomatoes and fried cucumbers we had for appetizers.  Excellent! Now if you are looking for some good ole fashion southern food this is your place!

Caritas Village
Binghampton Neighborhood
http://www.caritasvillage.org/

This is a great non profit restaurant that serves the Binghampton Community! The Bing Burger was definitely the star of the day with the chicken quesadilla coming in a close second. The special of the day (which several others  ordered )was so-so.  The special was sliced pork, mashed potatoes, and fresh mixed vegetables.  Thought the vegetables were the best thing on the plate .  Now we have a vegetarian in the group and she had the vegetable pannini and thought it was DELICIOUS! Some of us did have some desserts and thought they were just ok not the best cakes we had ever had (one was a chocolate mousse cake and banna cream pie)

Stone Soup
993 South Cooper
Cooper Young Area
http://www.stonesoupcafememphis.com/

What can we say about Stone Soup! Well the overall reaction to the food was that it was just a ok! Nothing special. Eeryone but one got the vegetable plate and well lets just say " Where is the seasoning?" The vegetables were indeed very fresh but they lacked a little seasoning in most people's opinion.  The vegetarian Melanie had the cheese quesadilla and she thought it was ok for a quesadilla but it was nothing special! Now on to the desserts. We are one group who loves a good dessert, welllllll lets just say we were not too enthusiastic about the desserts. Shirley even had to send hers back.....too salty!   Shirley, I bet you could  show them a thing or two when it comes to making chocolate pie!   Other desserts were not great either although Norris lucked out  with her bread pudding.  It's really a shame that the food wasn't  better because the house itself was a nice setting for lunch. After lunch we went to Melanie's house to tour her first home with some of her furninshings from the antique market in Atlanta! Fun times, Great Company, So so Food!

McEwen's
120 Monroe Ave
Dowtown Memphis
http://mcewensmemphis.com/

Best thing on the menue probably Shirley's salmon. The least favorite item was probably Norris's chicken.  She REALLY did not like it! Donna tried the special which turned out to be some very hot tacoswith chicken  Many liked the squash casserole but Marieta made a good point when she mentioned it was very cheesy and therefore pretty salty.  Fried okra was good though.  On to desserts.........none of which were outstanding.  Their specialty was banana cream pie which was pretty good. It was better than the Key Lime pie or coconut cake and some other cake....can't remember.

One big negative is that if you park on the street, you have to go feed the meter more money every HOUR.  ONE HOUR!That's all you get!  As a group, we believe that parking should be for at LEAST 2 hours!  Whose in charge of that?????What are they thinking??????It was a nice outing though and we were glad the wind didn't blow us away.  We were almost "gone with the wind" when we stepped out of the car on Monroe.   Two of our group shared with us that McEwens is much better at night.  Donna went so far as to say that her evening meal there might have been the best pork(?) she has ever had.  Just wanted everyone to know that they do have great food......sometimes!
Dont Forget: Parking is kinda BAD during lunch but at dinner you can valet for a small fee.

Uncle Lou's Fried Chicken
Millbranch
Whitehaven Area
Our last eating adventure led us to Uncle Lou's!  We were so glad to have Meli back from London and were pleased as punch  to have Manda,Lucy & soon to be born baby Gibson join us too! Those who met at Carol P's house to carpool were invited to hang out a little while  when they got back to her house.  What a wonderful place to hang out!  Her patio and garden and whole back yard is beautiful!  What a treat.....we thought we were on vacation somewhere!  Now on to the food!!!! This restaurant was visted by a Food Network person and they said it was some of the best fried chicken they had ever had! Well we took a visit and decided to try it and we will say it is pretty darn good! They have two kinds of sauces for chicken that we tried which was original and mild or hot style. The original style fried chicken received the best review from everyone.  The mild or hot styles have sauces on them which are OK but nothing great and too messy.  The honey butter biscuits seemed to appeal to everyone except Nelda.  She definitely did not care for the biscuits and she didn't particularly care for her chicken either since she accidentally got the mild style instead of original.  Sorry about that, Nelda!  Sides were pretty good though.....the corn nuggets were yummy and the fried okra was very good.  Any other sides good?  Help me out chums!  We tried the caramel cake as well. The icing is said to be made from scratch.  I thought it was very good.  Any other thoughts out there? Uncle Lou  visited with us a while asking where we were from and what brought us down to his place?  He was very nice and encouraged us to come back soon. We also thought this would be a great place to cater from for one of our CBS lunches.

Slider Inn
Peabody Ave
Midtown Area
www.facebook.com/SliderInn

Our outing this week to The Slider Inn was fun and we especially enjoyed having Manda and Lucy join us.  Manda hopes that she does NOT  make it to next week's luncheon however because she is ready for Baby Gibson to arrive!  We are awaiting the news any day!!!

First let's start with the good stuff.  Shirley and Melva both thought the hamburger sliders  with bleu cheese and caramelized onions were great!  Carol P. ordered the lobster roll which she thought was very good.  The fries with a sweet and salty thing going on were very good as well as a bourbon sauce to dip them in. Potato salad was good and we all got to sample their "award winning" chili (thank you , Norris) which was good but not the best ever( we thought).  The strawberry cake was very good(thank you Marieta for sharing) and Norris ordered the ice cream of the day....some kind with Irish whiskey in it.  It was served in a martini glass and looked really appetizing....good presentation.

Now for the bad.......Shirley and Melva both thought the "Low Down" chicken slider was so-so and the special of the day , a chicken salad slider, was not very good at all.  Donna was a thumb's down on this one too.  The place itself is sort of quirky and interesting. Melva particularly loved the entrance to the kitchen area which was an old phone booth door.  The outside eating area is very nice but the picnic tables do not lend themselves to seating more than 4 or so people.
This restaurant is also owned by the same people who own Barnone downtown on Main

So sorry for the long post!!!! This Wednesday we will be at a different restaurant and we will let you know how that is. Until then be well!
